Reunion 2004 [Journal]

Overdue for an update… Last weekend I flew up to Baltimore for my 5 year reunion. I didn’t know what to expect, having never been to one before and also seeing the fairly short roster of my class’ attendees. All in all it was a fun time, but not at all what was planned.

There were only about ten registered people from our class, of which I met up with three. One was Cory, who I keep in contact with regularly. The others were Jamie Casey and Shannon Doyle, two women I probably never spoke with while in school. Our class leadership completely failed us, so we just made our own fun. I’m still not sure how I completely rate the weekend, not as fun as I would have hoped, but more fun that I had feared. If you can make sense of that, 5 points.

Kevin called me a few weeks ago to invite me to a Peter Frampton concert with Corinne and Cass. Hmmm, who’s Peter Frampton again? Some guitar guy right? Why not I figured, it’ll be fun to hang out with some folks. Looks like most everyone else had forgotten, and Cass backed out, but it was this past Friday. I double checked the lineup and discovered that Styx and Nelson were also playing. Nelson, eak!

Fortunately we missed the Nelson brothers. But we got to witness Frampton ripping it up, he’s quite a gifted guitarist. What can I say about Styx. I knew nothing about them, except that they were from the height of the glamrock era. And indeed they were, five members with big hair, squealing instruments, and I swear the guitarist had a fan blowing on him. But it was fun, I sort of got into it by the end, they had showmanship. And the keyboard player was very good, proving it by blasting out Joplin’s The Entertainer rag-time at about 160bpm, but also making for a very strange rock concert.

I was hoping to attend the Mordecai Community picnic on Saturday, but the weather started turning before I headed over. But I got a lot more of my big stuff unpacked and put away. All of my old, useless, computers have found homes in closets. Why do I have 6 old Sun computers again? eBay, here they come. I got my turntables set up finally, upstairs. So now I can start practicing again. Finally, I can crank the volume without worrying about neighbors. Kickass.

Palmetto Pets [Journal]

Perhaps the title should read Palmetto Pests. I don’t want to keep anyone from ever visiting me (or maybe I do, heheh), but I’ve had a few visits in the past week from the good old American Cockroach. I should clarify that this is not the German Roach — the type that infest, colonize, and wreak havoc to a big city’s apartment buildings. These are actually outdoor bugs whose journeys sometimes take them inside of your house, usually in search of food. Needless to say, it still freaked me out to meet a 2 inch roach in my kitchen while I was barefoot. Anyway, had an exterminator our yesterday morning. It has already proved somewhat successful as I’ve found a few upside-down roaches twitching away their last moments. Good riddance.

Jordan is visiting for a few days while he looks for his future housing, so its nice to have some company. Meanwhile I’ve continued unpacking, finding homes for things, getting settled. I bought a washer and dryer, and a TV *gasp*! Having not had a TV for over a year, it is sort of nice to once again. I’ll just have to fight the urge to over-indulge in my viewing of it. I have a multi-region DVD player on the way, so I will be able to watch all of my foreign DVDs on a TV, rather than only my computer. Yea, I am most verily pleased!

This Friday I’m heading up to Baltimore to my 5-year college reunion. We’ll see how it goes, I really have no idea what to expect. It will be nice to be back on campus, reminiscing on old times.

Home Alone [Journal]

Well, I’m moved. My parents and I shuttled two car loads over Saturday morning and Greg came up in the afternoon to help load the truck. I was sore until Monday, but its over. Mom and Dad were great, they really helped me keep moving when I felt to tired to continue. And Melissa left me three dinners in the fridge, from her fiance’s family’s restaurant, the Mecca.

Had a good time at the PR, met my next door neighbors Mark and Kristine, I think her name was. The PR is very much a dive, but it was cool to meet some of their friends. I met someone (Charlotte?) who lived upstairs in my house back when it was two apartments. And I met Kim, a texture designer/artist at Red Storm.

Oddly, I’ve been more down that I would have expected, considering that I just successfully moved. I had been planning towards this for several months and now that it is over there a sort of anti-climax. Plus, I feel sort of alone in this new, strange place. I’m sure it will pass, but for now it kind of stinks.

Major messup today: the real-estate attourney’s office lost my cashier’s check for my down payment. So I had to go home, get some paperwork, go to the bank, explain this whole mess, and begin a fairly complicated mess to stop the lost check and get it reissued. Cashier’s checks are basically like cash in hand, so its a deliberately convoluted process to stop the payment of one, otherwise they’d just be a normal, personal check. Anyway, it certainly added some much unneeded stress to today.

Need to get a washer and dryer, a television, and probably a new couch. Some of the work I asked the sellers to do still needs to be done (they gave me money to do it), so I should probably get moving on that. I’m strongly considering getting central air upstairs, I think it would be a worthwhile investment in the house and in my comfort.

I still have lots of unpacking to do. But my office is pretty much done, which is great.
