July 2005 Mix [Music,My Music]

Well, here’s a rare sight round these parts these days, a recent mix! I made this one over the 4th of July weekend. My technique certainly left quite a bit to be desired, as most every transition had something that could have been done better. But the tracks are pretty good (I’m detecting a theme).

It starts off with the very good Synchronicity, a great proggy trance track, makes a quick detour through techno, and then takes a, rather abrupt and poor, turn into proggy house. But as this is me of course, we end up in the trance vein. And if I could just highlight #5, good lord do I love that track! Oooo, and the bassline of #7, I waited over a year for that vinyl to get released. And #9 (First Aid) is totally sweet. Ok, I’ll stop now.

Grandfather Mountain [Journal]

Last weekend, {Andrew}, his wife Sandra, and I drove out to Blowing Rock, NC. It is about 3 hours away, up in the Blue Ridge mountains, where the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games were taking place. I hadn’t been to a Scottish games in a few years, and Andrew and Sandra had never, plus there were all sorts of other things to see up in the mountains. So, we made a weekend of it, leaving work around noon on Friday, and arriving back Sunday evening.

I had never been into the NC mountains, except for a very short trip to Asheville where I really just saw the city itself. It is damn gorgeous. Blowing Rock is a really nice little town that reminded me a lot of Mendecino and Cambria in CA — lots of fairly wealthy yuppies and retirees it would seem. Perhaps this is where some the well-to-do of Charlotte come to nest; there were lots of boutiques and little nic-nac shoppes which is why I think the similarity to the aforementioned towns struck me.
