Wow wow wow. You really must go rent [[imdb:0252444 Rabbit Proof Fence]]. Both heartwrenching and heartwarming, it is the story of three young aboriginal half-castes who escape their state-sponsored relocation and education and return home. It is truly horrifying that this happenned, but gratifying to see human spirit triumph in the end.
Phillip Noyce does a marvelous with three young and untrained child actors. All give quite notable preformances, and will capture your heart by the end of the film. The 7 or 8 year old Tianna Sansbury playing Daisy is so damn cute. There is an innate ability there somehow, and obviously an intelligence too.
Notable music by Peter Gabriel, as usual, as well. There was nice integration of native Aboriginal sounds, but not in a Crocodile Dundee way. Also, check out the making-of on the DVD, you’ll get a glimpse of how truly inexperienced these child actors are, which makes their success a sweeter victory.
And completely orthogonal, kudos to Noyce for using first-person flash backs in the memory sequence. Nothing bugs me more than showing a picture of a contemplative person (having a thought or memory), and then cutting to the same third-person footage we saw when we first viewed that scene. Just a pet peeve of mine, who sees themselves when they contemplate on a past event?
