U-571 [Movies]

Have you ever gotten 2 minutes into a movie and then realized that you’ve already seen the movie? I hate that. [[imdb:0141926 U-571]] is one of those movies for me, I must have stubmled upon it on HBO years ago and forgotten.

It is a pretty decent war movie, fairly simplistic, but not formulaic Hollywood puke. It was made in 2000 and some of the visual effects already look dated. On the other hand, they also had some amazing non-computer effects, like building two full-size, 400 tonne submarines. And gigantic rain towers that produce a very convincing scene.

Overall, it was enjoyable, although it is hard to seperate what I remembered from watching the movie the first time and what was just predictable.

Kristin [Journal]

Just came back from dinner with Kristin and her mom. We ate at the Thirsty Bear, a tapas place on Howard in SF. They’re in town for a Wilco/REM concert at the Shoreline. It was nice to see familiar faces. There seems to be a trend, when meeting up with old friends, of heavy reminiscing. Tonight was no exception of course. Names of high school schoolmates I hadn’t thought of in 8+ years were brought up. Kristin and I have known each other since Montessori, so we had lots of nostalgic fodder.

Afterwards Kristin and I went out for drinks. I can’t tell you how nice it was to hang out with an old friend. Someone who has known me forever, and just feel comfortable with, there aren’t really any airs to put on. I have managed to see good friends from time to time, but tonight I could just let go. And it wasn’t as rushed and distracted as at a Christmas party, or a mutual friend’s wedding.

Damn, I just found out that I missed the Exposure Festival I mentioned [[grahame:music/exposure here]]. Dang it, I was really looking forward to hearing a bunch of the DJs involved. Hopefully they’ll replay most of the sets. And of course, I switched my ripper to the ambient channel, which wasn’t one of the channels used in the festival, so I captured none of it :(

Today I received the replacement for that [[grahame:music/benfoldslive Ben Folds]] cd Amazon sent without the DVD. This one was also sans DVD, so I’m guessing they’ve mislabeled the product in their database. This is only slightly annoying, as I am quite pleased with the CD part. A DVD would have been nice though, and I got my hopes high thinking that one was included. I wonder what they will do for me, if anything?
